Transforming Darlene's new home - a 1961 retro-kitchen with flowered black wallpaper, chair rail border and forest green doors turned out to be quite a challenge. Not only was the wallpaper a struggle to remove, but we decided the best look for the doors would be a cherrywood gel stain to match the existing dining room. With a little help from my friends (actually Barry, Darlene and 12 yr old son, Logan are my in-loves : )), the first day was the hardest. Getting every little flake of wallpaper off then washing the paste and spackling the damaged areas produced a superb wall finish. The color choice proved to be the time consumer. after 3 samples for the wall and 4 gel stain and base color examples, Darlene came through with great picks! Pittsburgh Paints product called Manor Hall was an excellent finish coating, and Min Wax Cherrywood gel stain with a rust color base tone produced the desired results. As you can see, the effort was well worth it, updating the kitchen to a contemporary look and enlarging the space optically.
Special thanks to Logan, who encouraged me the whole way by saying repeatedly how great it was coming along. And of course, Darlene who made the final choices and did the hard part - SHOPPING!
I love you guys and thanks for being my first customer in the Pittsburgh area! Go Steelers!
